ExpiatoriA is a 6-piece doom metal band from Genoa, Italy, formed in 1987. The band’s first album “Shadows” will be released via Black Widow Records and Diamonds Prod. on cd and vinyl on November 4th, 2022. The full length is a treat for all fans of Mercyful Fate, Candlemass, Paul Chain and old-school heavy metal, with a hint of prog.
"Shadows" is the long-awaited debut album of heavy metal veterans ExpiatoriA. It features the contribution of some outstanding musicians within the Italian rock and metal scene: Diego Banchero (founder and bassist of label-mates, the dark prog band Il Segno del Comando) on "Asylum of the Damned", Edmondo Romano (wind instruments for countless projects and bands) on "Asylum of the Damned", Raffaella Càngero (voice of heavy-prog-folk band La Janara) on "Ombra - Tenebra Part 2", and Freddy Delirio (keyboards in Italian cult horror metallers Death SS) on "Seven Chairs and a Portrait".
Despite the band's long history, "Shadows" only features new compositions the band has been writing in the past few years. All fans of traditional, punchy heavy metal and doom will find something intriguing in the songs. Their atmospheres will also appeal to prog and gothic lovers. This mixed musical offering results from the varied background of the band members.
The songs are enriched by David Krieg's intense vocal delivery. David is also the primary author of the lyrics, and his writings deal with the concept of mystery and the dark side of things, where "dark" doesn't necessarily mean "bad" or "evil"... but just "hidden".
ExpiatoriA will present "Shadows" in a concert with L'Impero Delle Ombre, the Italian cemetery rock band, in Genoa on November 5th 2022. More gigs will follow. The band is writing new songs and giving new life to some old gems.
ExpiatoriA's history
The band was founded by the brothers Massimo and G.B. Malachina (Guitar and Bass), and Massimo Cottica (ex Mad Poltergeist, on vocals, guitar and bass), in 1987. A few demo tapes were released in the early Nineties, such as "Tribute to Death" and "Symphonies Of Decomposed Human Flesh". At the peak of its first life, ExpiatoriA also got featured on cult underground label Dracma Records' 1992 edition of the compilation "Nightpieces" with a track called "Suffering Days". These early recordings show a mixture of styles, from Mercyful Fate and Paul Chain to Slayer and Death. Many line-up changes occurred, leading to the band's split in 1998.
2010, ExpiatoriA came back with a 6-track EP titled "Return to Golgotha", followed by a 3-track EP "Crimson Evil Eyes" in 2016. The latter sees Giambattista Malachina's return on bass and the addition of Jason Ulfe (Winternius) on vocals.
After a few more line-up changes, ExpiatoriA recorded its first full-length "Shadows" in 2022 with a new line-up: David Krieg (Tony Tears, Neith and ex Malignance) on vocals, Edoardo Napoli (ex Damnation Gallery) on guitar and keyboards, and Massimo Messina on drums (Stefano Caprilli plays drums on “When Darkness Falls”).
The band's current line-up includes Flux (Tony Tears and Tenebrae, touring member of Abysmal Grief) on keyboards and Enrico Meloni (IKITAN and The Healing Process) on drums.

"Shadows" è l’atteso debutto della storica band heavy metal ExpiatoriA. L’album si avvalora del contributo di alcuni grandi musicisti della scena rock e metal italiana: Diego Banchero (fondatore e bassista dei compagni di etichetta, Il Segno del Comando, band dark prog) in "Asylum of the Damned", Edmondo Romano (strumenti a fiato per innumerevoli progetti e band) in "Asylum of the Damned", Raffaella Càngero (voce della band heavy-prog-folk La Janara) in "Ombra - Tenebra Part 2", e Freddy Delirio (tastiere nella band horror di culto Death SS) in "Seven Chairs and a Portrait".
Nonostante la band sia in attività da alcuni decenni, tutte le canzoni contenute in "Shadows" sono nuove e di recente composizione.
I sei brani dell’album lasceranno il segno negli amanti delle sonorità heavy più tradizionali e taglienti, e del doom classico. “Shadows” è intriso di atmosfere prog e gotiche. La varietà dell’album è il risultato del diversificato bagaglio musicale di ciascuno dei componenti della band. Le canzoni sono arricchite dall’intensa prestazione vocale di David Krieg. David è anche il principale autore dei testi: le sue canzoni parlano di mistero e del lato oscuro delle cose, dove per “oscuro” non si intende “malvagio” o “cattivo”, ma semplicemente... “nascosto”.
Gli ExpiatoriA presenteranno "Shadows" in un concerto con L'Impero Delle Ombre, la band Cemetery Rock italiana, il 5 novembre a Genova, in occasione della pubblicazione dell’album. A breve verranno annunciati altri concerti.
La band è impegnata nella scrittura di nuove canzoni e nella rivisitazione di vecchi cavalli di battaglia.
Storia degli ExpiatoriA
La band fu fondata dai fratelli Massimo e G.B. Malachina (Chitarra e Basso), e Massimo Cottica (ex Mad Poltergeist, voce, chitarra e basso), nel 1987. Gli ExpiatoriA pubblicarono due demo all’inizio degli anni Novanta: "Tribute to Death" e "Symphonies Of Decomposed Human Flesh". All’apice del successo di questa prima incarnazione, la band fu inclusa nella compilation "Nightpieces", del 1992, pubblicata dall’etichetta di culto Dracma Records, e contenente la canzone "Suffering Days". In queste prime registrazioni, lo stile della band è piuttosto vario: si passa da Mercyful Fate e Paul Chain a Slayer e Death. Il susseguirsi di svariati cambi di formazione portò, nel 1998, allo scioglimento.
Nel 2010 gli ExpiatoriA tornarono alla luce con EP di 6 canzoni intitolato "Return to Golgotha", seguito, nel 2016, da un altro EP, questa volta di 3 canzoni, “Crimson Evil Eyes”. Quest’ultima pubblicazione vide il ritorno in formazione di Giambattista Malachina al basso e l’ingresso di Jason Ulfe (Winternius) alla voce. Dopo alcuni assestamenti nella formazione, gli ExpiatoriA registrano il primo album nel 2022, intitolato "Shadows", con la seguente formazione: David Krieg (Tony Tears, Neith ed ex Malignance) alla voce, Edoardo Napoli (ex Damnation Gallery) alla chitarra e alle tastiere, e Massimo Messina alla batteria (Stefano Caprilli ha registrato la batteria in “When Darkness Falls”).
La formazione attuale si arricchisce di Flux (Tony Tears e Tenebrae, turnista dal vivo per gli Abysmal Grief) alle tastiere ed Enrico Meloni (IKITAN ed The Healing Process) alla batteria.
